Founded in 1994, Econergy International finances, develops, owns and operates independent and clean power projects in the high-growth markets of the Americas. Our mission is to create shareholder value by satisfying the rapidly increasing demand for the production of clean renewable energy. By generating revenue from renewable energy sources, we are defining a new world of energy – how it is financed, sourced and delivered. In addition to developing renewable power projects, Econergy International is also actively engaged in the carbon markets and provides consulting services, all of which give Econergy International its unique ability to source projects in its core markets. Publicly listed on AIM, a market operated by the London Stock Exchange, Econergy International operates from offices in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica.
As an Independent Power Producer (IPP), Econergy International’s strategy is to develop, build, own and operate renewable power plants as well as optimize clean energy assets that add economic value. The renewable IPP business is characterized by investment in long-term assets anchored by long-term contracts for the sale of energy, and in many cases, carbon credits. Econergy has assembled a world-class team of managers from the global IPP, utility and carbon businesses to execute on our ambitious business plan. Overview History Office Specializations Participating in Regulated and Voluntary Markets Carbon Market Development Carbon Project Transaction Support Overview Econergy International's Carbon Markets Group provides extensive services to projects that capitalize on the compliance market around the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol, as well as voluntary trading among US and European actors. Our work in this area ranges from supporting the development of projects that reduce GHG emissions to providing services for project preparation and registration, as well as brokerage of credits into voluntary or regulatory markets. Return to top History Econergy is one of the pioneers in the carbon markets. We developed the first methodology submitted to the governing body of the CDM, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and continue to successfully shepherd our own and others' projects through the UNFCCC regulatory process. Our staff also has extensive experience with the leading regulatory and voluntary market actors in identifying, assessing and contracting for carbon credits from US-based projects that reduce GHG emissions. Return to topOffice Specializations From our São Paulo, Brazil office, Carbon Markets performs carbon due diligence on the company's projects in Latin America that generate GHG offsets, and provides technical advice and support to numerous public and private entities to further the development of the international carbon trading system. From our US offices, we actively pursue project development in the US that optimizes the potential to benefit from growing regulatory and voluntary demand for GHG emission reduction credits. We also contribute to the development of programs at the state and federal level which foster investment in high-quality GHG emission reduction projects domestically and internationally. Return to topGoals of Participating in Regulated and Voluntary Markets Our goals in the regulated and voluntary markets are: (1) to benefit from sales of high-quality CERs and VERs from our own projects; (2) to contribute to a greater understanding of the value of project-based offsets in achieving real, permanent and verifiable reductions in global GHG emissions; and (3) to capitalize on increasing acceptance of market mechanisms that achieve environmental goals. Return to topCarbon Market Development The Carbon Markets Group's primary purpose is to originate high-quality Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) and Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) for sale in regulatory and voluntary markets. We fulfill this purpose for the benefit of Econergy International's own investments as well as the investments of partners and clients. For both voluntary and regulatory market actors, we develop project documentation and establish protocols and procedures to ensure the greatest economic and environmental value offset projects. Today, in addition to markets for “offset” generation and sale as drivers to low-carbon project development, we also capitalize on increased availability of private and public financing, favorable tax schemes, preferred permitting and licensing regimes, and consumer choice. The Carbon Markets Group therefore also guides companies' ability to make credible offerings of projects that provide useful energy and fuels while simultaneously reducing GHG emissions. Return to topCarbon Project Transaction Support Econergy International supports client projects through the verification stage, as well as assists the client with the Carbon Credits Transactions to ensure competitive prices with reliable buyers. Econergy's expertise in the transaction of Carbon Credits enables us to identify reliable buyers willing to purchase at competitive prices through valid and internationally-recognized contractual schemes. Econergy International is a renewable Independent Power Producer with a 14-year track record in the Americas. Founded in 1994 as a consultancy, Econergy International began carbon brokerage activities in 2001 and investment activities in 2004 with the financial close of the CleanTech Fund (CTF). In February 2006, Econergy International completed an IPO on AIM, a market operated by the London Stock Exchange, raising net proceeds of $95.7 million.
The Consulting Group continues to provide Econergy International and its clients with vital intelligence on renewable energy markets, financing and technologies. It also moved Econergy International into center stage of the carbon markets in the late 1990s by developing the first carbon fund with current total capital of $180 million.
As an outgrowth of these activities, Econergy Brasil was founded in 2001, dedicated to the compliance market of the Kyoto Protocol (the Clean Development Mechanism). Most recently, our Carbon Markets Group has also become active in providing services on voluntary trading among US and European actors.
In 2004, with a solid reputation as a Latin American expert on renewable energy markets and financing, and on the heels of our carbon activities, Econergy International helped 5 international development banks to develop a $25 million private equity fund focused on small-scale clean energy projects in Latin America. Econergy International is the CleanTech Fund’s Limited Partner and the General Partner.
Culminating Econergy International’s transformation into a renewable independent power producer, the Company completed its listing on AIM in February 2006. We are actively placing the proceeds into clean energy projects in the Americas that range from 20-150 megawatts.
